Through the direct import of our Bulungi highland coffee from Uganda there are no intermediaries. The coffee farmers are always remunerated in line with their costs and effort. By joining together, the cooperatives can thus invest in more projects that improve the living situation of people locally in a sustainable way. One of the most important topics for people and, in particular, children locally is undoubtedly the supply of clean drinking water. We have directly supported such a project through the construction of rainwater tanks in the primary schools of the cooperative KWETERANA. The tanks store the necessary water to improve hygiene and safeguard the drinking water resources for the children.
Enjoying something special with a good conscience
The coffee plants for the Bulungi grow at the Equator at an altitude of between 1,400 and 1,900 metres. We therefore speak of “highland beans” that ripen under the shade-giving leaves of the Matoke plantains. The “shadow-grown” beans ripen slowly. Only the red ripe coffee berries are carefully picked by hand. Through this “single picking”, we already ensure the high quality of our highland coffee during the harvest. It continues by hand – in our traditional roasting house in Vienna, the raw coffee beans are roasted slowly and gently at low temperatures in a long-time process. Every sip takes connoisseurs back to the small coffee fields in Uganda.
